Hello from the Spey Lodge gang. We are just weeks from finishing up our 2004 season and want to thank all of you who joined us on this incredible season of fishing adventures.
We are still in the heart of our fall steelhead season which will go until the Middle of Nov. I can't say enough about our Nov fishery for Steelhead, plenty of fall fish in already with new fish entering the Copper river daily.
This year started with an excellent Spring steelhead season, As early as March we had great water conditions and awesome chrome steelhead to the fly! I'm sure many of you remember the pictures... In mid May summer arrived early bringing hot days which lasted until the end of Aug. All the salmon fishing we experienced was early, it seemed the King Salmon we're maturing and getting ready to spawn 2 weeks early and at the same time we experienced early summer steelhead like never before so it wasn't a bad trade off. We had guests here for King Salmon fishing who caught steelhead instead, it was an unexpected treat with some of our first steelhead in the 20Lb range! The guys from the Leland Fly Shop know what I'm talking about!
The HOT weather we experienced resulted in extremely warm water conditions, this was our enemy this season for several weeks... I won't get into it too much, let's just say the Skeena reached 70 degrees at one point!
Our runs of fish we're strong through out but some had concerns about the late King Salmon runs.. It was a tough year to judge based on the above. So far it seems the numbers of steelhead are greater than last and it was evident the commercial caught steelhead seemed down from 2003. So far this year we've had more large fish and have experienced nearly none with net marks unlike last season.
Our Fall season has proven to be a great challenge for water conditions but when you get to wet a line you have banner days! . An example is our group from last week, they did it all in one day. They hooked fish on the dry fly, hooked good numbers through out the day, put the rookie on fish in the first hour of his flyfishing life, and Mike one of the group members hooked a Steelhead of a lifetime on his first Nass Steelhead trip right in front or what will be the Spey Lodge Nass Camp starting in 2005, We'll call this the home pool! The picture attached says it all.
The beautiful thing about Spey lodge is the amount of optional waters to guide on when water conditions are challenging. We had some great days fishing Silvers (Coho Salmon) when steelhead waters were a mess. In the Northwest, weather and water conditions are always on the horizon. In the Steelhead world, there are not many destinations that can give you options based on their locations, we're very fortunate this way and many of our guests experienced that this season.
Many of you received letters about our deadline for booking 2005 dates at 2004 rates. In order to receive these prices the dates must be booked before Nov. We would also like to mention that we have last minute dates available for this Nov steelheading on the Copper River, don't miss out on your 2004 steelhead trip which looks to be a great month so far. As I speak we are receiving warm weather, it was 60 this morning here and with the rough water conditions we've experienced this month I think November's going to be awesome! There's definitely allot of fish there and for the few anglers around they're going to have great fishing.
