Description of the Wild Coast and Estuary Ecology
Mbashe River
Location The
Mbashe River forms the boundary between Dwesa and Cwebe Game Reserves and
is 2 kilometers South of the fishing cottage. A scenic half-hour walk
along the beach, past Shark Island, or a 10-minute drive along the bush
road.
Ecology One
of the largest estuaries along the Wild Coast and is permanently open to
the sea, which is one of the most important breeding estuaries for
migratory fish species as well as the Great White and Zambezi shark. It
has extensive Mangrove swamps along the upper riverbanks. These mangrove
swamps play a vital part in the spawning sea fishes breeding cycle where
the high nutrient mud banks supply important cover and nutrition to both
parent and offspring. Being a nutrient hot spot, many types of predatory
fish occur along these areas, ensuring a lot of activity.
Substrate and Hydrology Being tidal and effected by yearly floods, the ever-changing river always has something different to offer. The summer months (November to March) bring fresh water through the river mouth, which is dirty due to inland soil erosion. This phenomenon only occurs during periods of heavy rainfall. Although the visibility is low, many larger predatory fish swim into the estuary to feed on smaller fish habitats that are disturbed by the strong seaward flow of water. During this time the shark, Cob and Grunter move up the river in shoals to feed and spawn.
During
the winter months (April to October), the water is cleaner and more stable
with gradual tidal fluctuations. Generally
the estuary mouth is about 50 meters wide and 10 meters deep, with steep
bank drop-offs which form ideal feeding banks for fish. The surf area at
the mouth runs at a medium gradient out to sea, good for surf fly fishing
for large predatory fish feeding into the estuaries.
Passing
through the estuary mouth, the river widens to about 150 meters, with good
shallow banks and channels. About
500 meters up the river the Mangrove swamps grace the banks. Full of mud
prawns, swimming prawns and fiddler crabs, these shallow muddy areas area
great areas for sight fishing, where chases are seen regularly.
Fish Species Cob
and Pignose grunter are caught along with the incoming and outgoing tides.
They follow the waters in shoals, feeding with the tide. The best chances
for catching them is when they are approaching the mouth, or entering or
leaving through the channel at the mouth. Cob are caught from 3 pounds to
120 pounds and are the main large river fish caught here. Skipjack,
Spotted Grunter, Bull mullet, River Bream and kingfish are caught along
the upper reaches and Mangroves.
Conclusion Being
one of the largest estuaries along the Wild Coast, the fishing
opportunities are unlimited. Some record size fish have been caught here
over the past years and because of the nature of the river, some fisherman
will catch species that have not yet been recorded in the area. The size
of the Mbashe puts no limitation on the size of fish, which use it for
breeding and feeding; we have spotted Great White shark of around 16 foot
here in the past.
Mbanyana River
Location The
Mbanyana River is a 10-minute walk along the beach North of the fishing
cottage or a 5-minute drive along the bush road. About 4 kilometers up
river is the majestic Mbanyana Waterfall, cascading down into the Mamba
Pools.
Ecology The Mbanyana River is a blind estuary, only opening to the sea during heavy flooding which is about once a year during summer. Even then it only stays open for a few weeks. During these few weeks, sea fish enter the estuary for spawning and feeding. Some of them get trapped in here for the year until the next flooding, causing a very closed system with allot of action.
The upper reaches of the Mbanyana are lined with sub-tropical Indigenous Yellowood forests, which are one of the richest nutrient hot spots in Africa. The fish benefit from these nutrients so has plenty of food for their isolated period here. The abundance of Kingfishers, Yellow billed kites and Fish Eagle indicate the volume of fish left behind after spawning. About
2 kilometers up the river, there are blind pools that also have trapped
sea fish in them and these fish are usually hungry.
Substrate and Hydrology Generally
predictable throughout the year with clear, calm waters.
The blind mouth is a gradual silted sandbar of about 3 feet deep,
running into the estuary of about 5 meters deep. This area is all sand
prawn grounds, which are excellent feeding grounds for predatory fish.
There is also an island in the middle of this area with deep gullies
running parallel to it, making good habitat for larger feeding fish.
Running
up the estuary, the sand bar turns into mud banks with mud prawn and river
crab. These banks are scattered with Mangrove swamps and Yellowood
forests. The banks drop off steeply into about a 3-meter gully in the
middle.
Fish Species The
main specie taken here is Skipjack. They give a lovely fight and give
allot of surface action. Spotted Grunter and Cob are caught along the mud
banks. Further up the estuary there is a large cliff face where the water
is very deep, we catch Snapper here which are very aggressive fish and
grow quite big. Other
fish caught here are Kingfish, Garrik, Bull Mullet and river Bream. Because
of its protected location, it is a reliable fishing spot throughout the
year. The banks are easy to
walk along with clear waters. The blind mouth allows for hip high wading
over a vast area.
Surf and Rock Fishing
Ecology Being part of the Indian Ocean and the Eastern African shores, we get the warm Mozambique current which brings along hundreds of species of feeding fish. The long beaches are separated by rocky outcrops leading into the sea. The shores are pounded by surf, which brings in and churns up food.
Substrate and Hydrology The rocks and reef are prime feeding grounds for most of the fish. When the waters are calm, one can throw in a fly off the rocks in the numerous gullies and channels. The surf breaks onto the beaches through two sets, the backline and shore break. Larger fish come in through the backline to feed on fish in the set break, which is usually calmer as the waves are reforming for the shorebreak. Fly-fishing is good in the channel where small game fish are caught.
Fish Species Cob,
Pignose Grunter, Shad, Garrick, Black Tail, Damba, Bream, Rockod, Shark,
Pompano, Black Steenbras, Blue Fish and other species are caught along
these shores.
Conclusion The
Mbashe and Mbanyana are usually good fishing places no matter what the
weather, whilst the sea is effected by the wind and the size of the swell.
The fishing is always good in the sea but is determined by these
weather factors which may restrict fishing access.
