Exclusive Salmon - Fishing in Siberia, Russia

Unspoiled Territory and lots of large Salmon!

Way up north - in the vast areas of unspoiled wilderness - on an uninhabited tributary to the gigantic Enisej River …- this is where you find the Fisherman’s Dream… The large ones…

You are invited to join our 10 day fishing adventure on the Russian River Taiga. Starting in the trappertown of Turuchansk just south of the Arctic Circle, we fly you by helicopter to our tent camps by the Baicha River.

Here, in one of the last real wilderness areas, IBEX TOURS can offer you 100 kilometres of river - free from pollution and people.  In the Baicha River you will be able to catch Taimen-, Lenok-, and Limba Salmon…and we mean large ones! All you need to bring is appropriate clothing, fishing equipment and a sleeping bag.  The rest will be provided for you; a pleasant camp, boats, guides and an interpreter. An English-speaking Norwegian, a camp manager and a cook will also be there to ensure all your needs are accommodated.  Two meals a day are served which include fresh game.

The temperature is + 20 degrees Celsius during the day and -2 to -3 degrees Celsius at night. We focus on taking care of all your requirements so that you can spend all your time doing what you love the most - catching trout!

IBEX TOURS arrange fishing tours to this magnificent Salmon river in the Siberian Taiga, and we invite you to come along!  Until recently, this area was unavailable to foreigners.  However, we have successfully negotiated with the local authorities, and are now able to offer you a chance to explore the unexplored…

You can join us in June / July when the Salmon migrate up the river, or in August / September when the Salmon is at its largest.  We offer 100 kilometres of river entirely at your disposal.  You can fish from the banks or from one of our boats…the choice is yours.

Fishing in the Baicha River.

The Baicha River runs between two other rivers, the Taza and the vast Enisej River.  Its total length is approximately 50 kilometres and it averages 25-30 metres in width.  The speed of the Baicha River is 0.8 m/s, and although the depth of the river depends on the volume of snow in the winter and rain levels, it is normally 0.8 to 1.2 metres.  The whirlpools can be up to 4 metres across.  The riverside varies between grassy, sandy and stony.  The river runs through small mountains 2-3,000 metres high bordered by Conifer, Birch, Fir, Alder, Birdcherry and Juniper.  The area is rich in insects, but there are no poisonous mosquitos.

As there is no human activity, this really is one of the last genuine wilderness areas in the world, giving you the chance to see elk, deer, lynx, otter and musk-rat.  There is also a rich birdlife; grouse, partridge, stoat, swans, loon, sandpiper, heron and crane.  In season you will be able to pick wild berries like currants and raspberries.

So, what can you expect to catch?  Besides pike, lake white fish and burbot, there are three kinds of Salmon:

1.   The Taimen Salmon (latin: hucho taimen).  This is the largest specimen.  A slim, silver grey body with bright red fins and spur.  The Taimen Salmon weighs approx. 5 - 20 kilos, but specimens weighing more than 30 kilos are not uncommon. Roomers among native “Evenks” even talk about salmons weighing 50-60 kilos..!

2.   The Lenok Salmon (latin: brachymystax) is a little rounder in shape and is dark brown with black specks.  Maximum weight is 15 kilos.

3.   The Limba Salmon (latin: brachymystax limba) is similar to the Lenok, but has large red specks on the body.

Flyfishing is the most efficient method in June and July.  However, in August and September you should try something new…why not try the floating mouse which is a small, artificial local mouse imitation!  We also recommend spinners at this time of year. - Sounds exciting…?
